Nearly a year after the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh—the deadliest modern workplace accident in the garment industry—worker safety issues continue to be a major issue across global supply chains. How should workplaces evolve to provide safe, equitable opportunities that create value for global supply chains and opportunities for workers?
Although factory auditing is an important step, there are further actions companies should take, and there is a strong business case for ensuring responsible supply chains. We will explore the issues with Anshu Sharma, director of disaster management consultancy and Marat Yu, implementer in Bangladesh. The discussion will focus on the importance of investments in people, behavior change and incentives-based interventions, and community engagement to make supply chains safer for workers.
