It is clear that we need to accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. At the same time, we need to ensure a just transition—one that is fair, equitable and inclusive. Because a net-zero future requires a transformation of economies and societies, a just transition is relevant and essential for all sectors, and all businesses need to examine and address how climate change and climate solutions affect people across their value chains. To do this, meaningful engagement with workers and communities and co-creation of solutions are critical components, as the transition cannot truly be considered 'just' unless those most affected are included and have an opportunity to shape its outcome.
The event will emphasize the importance of engaging workers and communities for a just transition and will share insights on how to conduct meaningful stakeholder engagement and co-creation. It will incorporate peer discussion via a practical exercise in which participants explore different stakeholder engagement considerations and a breakout session to discuss just transition issues of your choice. The event will be under Chatham House rules.
Tentative agenda:
- 2-2:15 p.m.: Welcome and introduction
- 2:15-2:35 p.m.: Insights from companies and civil society organizations on engaging stakeholders and just transition
- 2:35-3:20 p.m.: Breakout session using scenarios for stakeholder engagement and co-creation discussions centering around just transition
- 3:20-3:30 p.m.: Key highlights from discussions and wrap up
